The Scottish Society of Central California is pleased to announce the 2010 Scholarship Awardees.
Three outstanding young adults were presented at our August General Membership Meeting to receive their awards and enjoy a small reception. Pictured from left to right: Leandra Robinson (Freshman at UC Davis), a loyal family member standing in for Sherri Buchanan (Freshman at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo who was actually registering for college on that day!), Ken Bain (Past SSCC Chief and Scholarship Chairman), Amanda Temple (Freshman at CSU Fresno) and Ray McEdward (SSCC Chief.)
Meala-Naidheachd Ort, which is a hearty congratulations in Gaelic, to all the applicants this year. This Central Valley has many talented, considerate, intelligent and goal-oriented young men and women. It was very hard to choose! 2010 recipients represented high schools from all over the Central Valley: McLane High School (Fresno), Yosemite High School (Oakhurst) and Liberty High School (Madera). We are honored to continue our tradition of recognizing academic excellence and wish the Freshman Class of 2010 all the best! Sealbh math dhuit or Guid luck!

On April 24, 2010 members of the Scottish Society of Central California and Stag & Thistle Pipe Band supported Lemoore participants at the American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life." This is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of the American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times. Our talented bagpipers led volunteers for the Remembrance Lap around the track while playing a set of favorite scottish tunes: Amazing Grace, Scotland the Brave and Rowan Tree. Congratulations to all who participated in this important fund-raiser and awareness event. The Lemoore Relay for Life raised over $182,000 for the American Cancer Society! Pipers who are making ceol mor (the great music) are pictured from left to right: Fran Jamison, Rob Viau, Bonnie Afonin, Barry Putnam, Tom Rosedahl and Bill Jamison."

It's official! In honor of National Tartan Day, the City of Fresno declared the 6th of April as our own special day. Larry Westerlund, President of the Fresno City Council, met 20 members of the Scottish Society of Central California at Cold Stone Creamery, Fig Garden, to celebrate and read the 2010 proclamation. Members turned out in tartan finery to honor their clan association. A special award for "Best-dressed Scot" was given to Mr. Richard Bugg (Clan Pollock), who received a gift card to Cold Stone Creamery. Meala-naidheachd ort (Congratulations) to all Valley residents with Scottish heritage. A picture of the proclamation is now available in the Photo Album (look under "Spot a Scot" in the sidebar.) |
